Naturalization Attorney In Durham, North Carolina

What Do I Need To Do To Apply For U.S. Citizenship?

After holding lawful permanent resident status for five years or more, many individuals become eligible to apply for United States citizenship through the naturalization process. In some cases, those who are married to U.S. citizens may qualify after three years. Eligibility also depends on meeting additional requirements, including continuous residence in the United States, physical presence, and good moral character.

Applicants must also demonstrate an understanding of the English language, U.S. history, and the structure of the U.S. government as part of the naturalization process. Successfully completing these steps allows individuals to obtain many of the same rights and privileges enjoyed by natural-born U.S. citizens, including the ability to vote and fully participate in civic life.

Karina Herhusky works directly with clients in Durham, North Carolina, and throughout the United States to help them determine whether they qualify for naturalization and to guide them through the application process. If you believe you may be eligible and are ready to take the next step toward U.S. citizenship, contact Herhusky Law Office, PLLC to schedule a consultation and begin the process with confidence.

How Do I Start the Process?

During your initial consultation, Karina Herhusky will review your background and immigration history to determine whether you meet the requirements to apply for naturalization. This review helps identify potential issues early and ensures you have a clear understanding of your eligibility before moving forward.

If you qualify, Karina assists with gathering the information needed to complete Form N-400, the official application for U.S. citizenship. She also helps identify and organize any supporting documents required for your application and explains what to expect during the process, including the naturalization interview and testing requirements.

Once your application is ready, Karina works with you to prepare and submit the N-400 to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Throughout the process, she remains available to answer questions and provide guidance so you can move forward with confidence. What Will Happen at My Interview?

For your naturalization interview, you will need to bring your green card along with a valid state ID or driver’s license to confirm your identity. During the interview, a USCIS officer will review the information you provided on your Form N-400 and ask you to confirm that it remains accurate. If any details have changed since filing, you will be given the opportunity to explain those changes and provide supporting documentation when required.

The interview also includes a review similar to what many applicants experienced during the green card process. You will be asked to demonstrate basic English reading and writing skills by reading a sentence aloud and writing a dictated sentence. In addition, you will take a civics test consisting of 10 questions about U.S. history and government. Answering at least six questions correctly is required to pass.

While the interview may feel intimidating, thorough preparation can make the process much more manageable. Karina Herhusky helps clients understand what to expect and prepare for each part of the interview so they can approach it with confidence. With clear guidance and support, you can move through this final step toward U.S. citizenship feeling informed and prepared.
